In Comua Santa, a community in Alto Molócuè district, lives Maurício Felizberto Piriate, 56 years old, father of eight and grandfather of five. For over four years, he has been a community volunteer in the fight against leprosy, a mission he embraced with his whole heart.

“What motivates me is seeing people healed. When I see change, I find the strength to keep going,” he says with a calm smile.

Since 2022, Maurício has been supporting 40 people affected by leprosy and their families, and ten of whom are still under treatment. He visits each of them, brings words of encouragement, monitors their symptoms, and ensures they receive the care they need. In remote communities, where there are no doctors or regular transport, Maurício is often the only link between patients and the health system.

His faithful companion in this mission is a bicycle, which he uses to travel long distances, sometimes more than three hours a day to reach one person, between scattered homes, fields, and muddy dirt roads.

“Sometimes I go all the way to Muaze. It’s very far. I’ve been drenched in the rain many times, but I can’t give up.”

The bicycle has become not only his means of transport but also an instrument of solidarity. With it, he carries people with limited mobility to the health facility for treatment.

“I can’t leave them behind. If I have the strength, I take them myself.”

A volunteer making a difference where there are no doctors

In rural areas where nurses are overstretched and resources are scarce, volunteers like Maurício are vital. They identify new cases, teach about symptoms, and help fight stigma and discrimination.

Maurício holds awareness sessions in churches, schools, and local markets, speaking about the causes, signs, and treatment of leprosy. He also ensures that health technicians travel to patients’ homes when mobility is a challenge, so that clinical tests and proper diagnosis can be made.

One story that touched him deeply was about a woman he found in a very critical condition:

“That mother couldn’t walk. Even her children didn’t care for her. I visited her, talked to her and helped clean her wounds. Today, she is healed. She told me, ‘I was dead, but now I am alive.’ That gives me so much joy, because I know my work was worth it.”

With humility and faith, Maurício believes that the fight against leprosy is a shared responsibility. He appeals to everyone who supports The Leprosy Mission to not give up.

“Don’t get tired of helping people affected by leprosy. Bring more initiatives, because only together can we end this disease.”

As long as there are roads to travel and lives to touch, Maurício will keep pedaling, not only with the strength of his legs, but with a heart full of hope.

Maurício Felizberto Piriate: A força que pedala pela esperança

Em Comua Santa, no distrito de Alto Molócuè, vive Maurício Felizberto Piriate, de 56 anos, pai de oito filhos e avó de cinco netos. Há mais de quatro anos, ele é voluntário comunitário na luta contra a lepra, uma missão que abraçou com o coração.
“O que me motiva é ver as pessoas curadas. Quando vejo mudanças, ganho força para continuar”, diz com um sorriso sereno.

Desde 2022, Maurício apoia 40 pessoas atingidas pela lepra, das quais dez ainda estão em tratamento. Ele visita cada uma, leva palavras de alento, faz o acompanhamento dos sintomas e garante que todos recebam os cuidados necessários. Em comunidades distantes, onde não há médicos nem transporte regular, Maurício é muitas vezes a única ligação entre os doentes e o sistema de saúde.

A sua fiel companheira de missão é uma bicicleta, que usa para percorrer longos trajetos, às vezes mais de três horas por dia, entre casas dispersas, campos e trilhos de terra batida  e lamacentas.
“Às vezes vou até Muaze, que é muito longe. Já me molhei muito na chuva, mas não posso desistir.”

A bicicleta tornou-se o seu meio de transporte e também instrumento de solidariedade. Com ela, leva pessoas com dificuldades de locomoção até à unidade sanitária para receber tratamento. “Não posso deixá-los sozinhos. Se eu tiver força, eu levo.”

O voluntário que faz a diferença onde não há médico

Nas zonas rurais onde os enfermeiros se desdobram para atender centenas de pessoas e os recursos são escassos, voluntários como Maurício são vitais. Eles identificam novos casos, ensinam sobre os sintomas e ajudam a combater o estigma.
Maurício faz palestras em igrejas, escolas e mercados, falando sobre as causas, sinais e tratamento da lepra. Também garante que o técnico de saúde se desloque às casas dos pacientes com maior dificuldade de mobilidade para realizar testes clínicos e confirmer o diagnostio.

Uma das histórias que mais o marcou foi a de uma mulher que encontrou em estado grave:
“Aquela mamã não andava. Nem os filhos se preocupavam. Eu visitava, conversava, ajudava a cuidar das feridas e até a lavar-se. Hoje, ela está curada. Disse-me: ‘eu já estava morta, mas agora estou viva’. Isso dá-me alegria, porque sei que o meu trabalho valeu a pena.”

Com humildade e fé, Maurício acredita que a luta contra a lepra é um trabalho conjunto e por isso faz um apelo a todos que apoiam a Missão Contra a Lepra.
“Não se cansem de apoiar as pessoas atingidas pela lepra. Que tragam mais iniciativas, porque só Unidos é que podemos acabar com esta doença.”

Enquanto houver estradas por percorrer e vidas por tocar, Maurício continuará a pedalar, não apenas com a força das pernas, mas com o coração cheio de esperança.
